On 25 April 2024, Ms. Isaiah (not her real name), 20, a Rohingya woman who has become a victim of trafficking in a criminal hub by the Moei River, Myawaddy, opposite to Tak\u2019s Mae Sot District, reveals in her interview with the \u201cTransborder News\u201d that two months ago, she embarked on a trip from her homeland in Myanmar\u2019s Rakhine State to go to Malaysia as her neighbor who was a broker promised her a job there, Her family was poor and there was no job in local area. Therefore, she decided to pay to get a job in Malaysia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt took us several days on boat and road trips. I had no idea where they were taking me to. Until, I have arrived at a place which I later learned to situate by the Moei River in Myawaddy, not Malaysia as my neighbor told me. They took me to a building where more than 100 Rohingyas were being held captive. They told me if I wanted to get freed, I had to pay them 62,000 baht,\u201d said Ms. Isaiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women who witnessed the trafficking survivors said that in the place where she was held captive, it appeared to be a warehouse with high walls. The whole premises are strictly guarded armed men to prevent anyone from absconding. When she asked other persons there, they all said they had been deceived the same way and were asked to pay the ransom, although the ransom rates are different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter 15 days in captivity, I called my relatives asking them to transfer them the money. My relatives had to borrow around until they could raise the money which could set me free. But those who could not raise such money have been subject to physical assault and intimidation being forced to acquire the money. Some have been resold while others have been forced to work in other buildings,\u201d said Ms. Isaiah. Several victims who had no phone, the keepers would call the local brokers asking them to inform the families in Rakhine State to make the transfer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Ae (not his real name), a coordinator who offers help to trafficking survivors in Shwe Kokko and KK Park and other criminal hubs by the Moei River in Myanmar\u2019s Myawaddy said that the case of Ms. Isaiah absolutely accounts for a trafficking survivor. In recent months, many Rohingyas have been lured here and demanded to pay ransom as well as resold constantly. These criminal hubs are under the protection of an ethnic armed organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Mr. Ae, at present, the trafficking rings focused their attention to the Rohingyas, not just those in Rakhine State, but even the Rohingyas who have been seeking a refuge in Bangladesh\u2019s refugee camps, many of whom have become a victim as well. These trafficking rings rely on brokers who are the Rohingyas themselves to cite various reasons to convince the potential victims, particularly the young generation who want to explore a better livelihood outside the camps. The brokers would tell them not to pay upfront, as the fees can be deducted from their wage later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese trafficking rings are so brutal. They extort for ransom and any women who cannot afford to pay the ransom would be resold into sex trade. Men who have no money to pay for their freedom are subject to physical abuse and torture. Many of them were killed and their bodies were tossed into the Moei River,\u201d said Mr. Ae. Until now, some victims have been rescued and have to be promptly evacuated from Mae Sot and Myawaddy since the trafficking rings are so powerful and have connections with the power that be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to security sources at the border, the concerned authorities have recently rescued 23 Ugandans including 17 men and six women who have been lured to work for romance scam 3-4 months ago. After the rescue, they have been transferred to the Thai authorities to enter the victim screening process or the National Referral Mechanism (MRN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt appears, however, that concerned authorities tend to conceal such problems claiming it might affect the victims. Meanwhile, the rescuers are so worried about the situation since until now several foreign victims have been rescued, but they have no idea where the victims have been transferred to, whether they have been referred to the embassy of their country of origin, or where?\u201d said the security sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to security sources, there are tens of thousands of foreigners who have fallen victim to the Chinese mafia who operate their underworld businesses in Shwe Kokko and KK Park. These victims have been lured to fly to Suvannaphum Airport and take a car to Tak\u2019s Mae Sot. They were then taken across via natural passes by the Moei River without inspection from the Thai authorities since the Chinese mafia had arranged with all the concerned authorities already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
