THA TON, Chiang Mai, Thailand, May 31, 2026 Civil society groups have rejected recent comments by the Chinese Embassy in Thailand downplaying concerns over heavy metal contamination in transboundary rivers, arguing that toxic pollutants are already accumulating in river systems and that authorities are ignoring the root cause \u2014 unregulated mining upstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The criticism came after a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy said recent monitoring data showed water quality remained within acceptable standards and pledged cooperation based on scientific principles. The statement drew strong reactions from environmental groups and community networks currently participating in the Peace Walk for Rivers, a six-day campaign along the Kok River calling for action on transboundary contamination affecting the Kok, Sai, Ruak, Mekong and Salween rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niwat Roykaew, chairman of the Chiang Khong Conservation Group, said the embassy’s statement appeared carefully timed to coincide with the first anniversary of public campaigns demanding action on river contamination, as well as ongoing activities related to the Peace Walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Chinese Embassy is trying to show that China is paying attention to the issue, but it is presenting the problem through a diplomatic lens that downplays the seriousness of what is actually happening,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Niwat argued that governments and companies involved in critical mineral supply chains have consistently attempted to minimise the scale of the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What I have emphasised all along is that governments and actors benefiting from these mineral supply chains are trying to reduce the perceived severity of the problem,” he said. “In reality, everyone shares responsibility \u2014 whether China, the United States or any other country benefiting from these minerals. Toxic substances are already accumulating. The Thai government, the Chinese government and all parties involved know that contaminants are present in these rivers and continue to build up.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the larger issue remained unresolved mining operations at the source of the contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Niwat called for stronger international standards governing the sourcing of minerals and urged governments and companies to stop relying on minerals produced by illegal or poorly regulated mining operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The accumulation of toxic substances is already a reality,” he said. “No statement can deny that. As long as mining continues, contamination will continue to accumulate.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He accused governments and corporations of shifting the burden onto affected communities while continuing to benefit from strategic minerals and rare earth elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You profit from these minerals while leaving local people to bear the costs \u2014 damage to health, livelihoods and the environment,” he said. “You call it the future of the world, but in the process you are destroying the world and the resources that ordinary people depend upon. How can this be called green energy when it comes at such a cost?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lai Barboda, a Brazilian social anthropologist from the Universidade Estadual do Cear\u00e1 currently conducting research at Chulalongkorn University’s Social Research Institute, said she had observed striking similarities between the impacts of Chinese investments in Latin America and those now emerging in northern Thailand and Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her research focuses on economic corridors in Latin America and Southeast Asia and their impacts on land management, Indigenous peoples, traditional communities and farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In both regions, communities are confronting very similar challenges,” she said. “Chinese investments, particularly in mining, have generated conflicts over natural resources, fisheries, agriculture and local livelihoods.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that communities in Brazil have also mobilised against large-scale mining projects involving uranium, rare earth elements and other strategic minerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I joined the Peace Walk from the first day and will continue to Chiang Rai because I want to understand how communities here are experiencing the impacts of mining linked to Chinese investment,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montree Chantawong of The Mekong Butterfly conservation group said the Chinese Embassy had selectively highlighted favourable water quality data without addressing broader contamination concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They are using a few figures to improve China’s image and create the impression that the problem is being addressed,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Montree noted that some monitoring stations only met water quality standards because cleaner tributaries such as the Kok River diluted contaminated flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that more than a year after contamination was first detected, no effective pollution control or treatment systems had been introduced at mining sites upstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The industry is essentially relying on nature to dilute pollution,” he said. “But contaminated sediments remain. Sediment testing has produced alarming results, with concentrations exceeding safety standards.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those sediments, he said, are entering food chains and agricultural areas during seasonal flooding, while authorities remain unable to explain how long toxic substances will persist in the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If China wishes to act as a responsible major power, it should require investors benefiting from rare earths and critical minerals to implement internationally recognised pollution control measures,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And if traceability cannot be established throughout the supply chain, China should suspend imports of those minerals. To date, we have seen little evidence of such action.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
