The safety threshold for protecting benthic, or bottom-dwelling, aquatic organisms is 33 mg\/kg, meaning the concentration was nearly nine times above the guideline level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the latest Chiang Mai University sampling found lower concentrations than the peak levels recorded previously, arsenic contamination remained elevated at several locations. Sediment samples collected at Sop Ruak contained arsenic concentrations of up to 61 mg\/kg, still more than double the accepted safety threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional sediment samples collected from areas on the Myanmar and Lao sides of the river contained arsenic concentrations of up to 46 mg\/kg, further supporting the conclusion that the source of contamination is likely located outside Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our research team would like to stress that arsenic is a silent threat,&#8221; Asst Prof Wan said. &#8220;It accumulates in the human body and can cause long-term health impacts. Communities living along the Mekong should remain vigilant and take precautions in their daily lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help local communities better understand the risks, researchers developed a colour-coded risk map. Areas marked in red represent critical-risk zones where direct contact with sediments should be avoided and consumption of aquatic animals should be approached with caution. Orange indicates high-risk areas where contact with sediments should be minimised. Yellow represents moderate-risk zones requiring ongoing monitoring, while green areas are considered low risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team hopes the findings will encourage communities and local authorities to strengthen health surveillance and environmental monitoring efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings come amid growing public debate over contamination in the Mekong basin. On May 31, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Thailand stated that China attaches great importance to heavy metal pollution in Mekong tributaries in Thailand and had taken note of recent monitoring reports released by Thai authorities, which indicated that water quality in the rivers concerned generally met safety standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement drew criticism from environmental groups and researchers, who argued that it did not accurately reflect the broader monitoring results. PCD data have consistently shown elevated levels of arsenic in both water and sediments in the Mekong and its tributaries. Only one recent monitoring round recorded arsenic concentrations at 0.01 milligrams per litre \u2014 exactly at Thailand&#8217;s water quality
