They remain in the river and continue to settle and accumulate in sediments,” he said on Thursday.

The comments followed the PCD’s latest survey, which found arsenic concentrations in Salween River sediments at levels considered severely harmful to benthic organisms, or bottom-dwelling aquatic species.

Asked about arsenic concentrations of around 40–70 milligrams per kilogram detected in sediments, Dr Wan said the figures represented a serious ecological threat.

“These levels exceed environmental safety thresholds by one to two times, increasing the likelihood that arsenic will enter and move up the food chain,” he said.

More importantly, the findings demonstrate that toxic contamination is occurring continuously, with no period in which arsenic levels have fallen below safety standards.

“This means communities are facing ongoing exposure risks at all times,” he said.

Dr Wan urged authorities to issue stronger public health warnings, advising residents to exercise extreme caution when using river water.

People who come into direct contact with river water should wear protective equipment such as gloves, he said, adding that fish and bottom-feeding aquatic species, including freshwater snails and shrimp, should not be consumed.

“During previous field visits to the Salween, many villagers mistakenly believed that cooking contaminated fish or aquatic animals would eliminate the danger. That is not true. Heavy metals do not disappear through cooking,” he said.

Regarding contamination detected in tributaries of the Salween, Dr Wan said floodwaters may have transported polluted sediments into smaller waterways during previous high-water events.

When asked how the Salween situation differs from contamination reported in the Kok and Mekong rivers, Dr Wan noted that the Salween carries a larger volume of water and appears visually clearer, yet contains higher concentrations of contaminants.

“In the Kok, Sai and Mekong rivers, contamination levels generally correspond with turbidity and suspended sediments,” he said.

“The Salween is less turbid than the Kok and Sai rivers, yet contamination levels are higher. This suggests that pollutants in the Salween may be present in dissolved form rather than attached to sediments. That is potentially more dangerous because aquatic organisms are exposed more directly to the contaminants.”

He said the difference may be linked to variations in mining and processing methods at the source of the contamination, including the types of chemicals used.

On June 18, the PCD published results from its fourth round of sediment sampling in the Salween River, conducted between May 25 and 29. The survey covered monitoring stations from Ban Tha Ta Fang in Mae Sariang district to Ban Sop Moei in Sop Moei district of Mae Hong Son province.

The agency found arsenic concentrations exceeding environmental standards at every monitoring station, ranging from 34 to 68 mg/kg. Thailand’s sediment quality guideline sets the threshold for arsenic at 33 mg/kg.

Recorded arsenic concentrations included:

Ban Tha Ta Fang, Mae Yuam subdistrict, Mae Sariang: 50 mg/kg, Mae Sariang–Sop Moei district boundary: 34 mg/kg, Mae Sam Laep pier, Sop Moei: 46 mg/kg, Ban Pu Tha hamlet: 47 mg/kg, Ban Phala-u hamlet: 68 mg/kg, and Ban Sop Moei: 39 mg/kg.

The PCD also reported contamination in several tributaries.

Arsenic concentrations exceeded safety thresholds for benthic organisms in the Sam Laep River (17 mg/kg), Yuam River (16 mg/kg) and Pai River (16 mg/kg). Chromium contamination was also detected in the Yuam River at 47 mg/kg, exceeding the guideline value of 43.4 mg/kg.

Sediment quality in the Mae Po River and Mae Kong Kha stream (Salween’s tributaries) remained within acceptable standards, according to the report.

Arsenic levels in riverbed
