What is my dream? I want to become a deputy district chief. But what about the children in refugee camps—do they have dreams too? Or are their dreams merely daydreams, forever out of reach?
These small questions have lingered in my mind for as long as I can remember. I am a refugee child from the Ban Mai Nai Soi Refugee Camp in Mae Hong Son Province. Our home sits nestled in a mountain valley, surrounded by dense trees and nature.
Every morning, families wake up early to cook and prepare meals. Adults get ready for work while children head off to school. You see crowds of children crisscrossing down the paths—some walking alone, others in large groups—all heading toward the exact same destination: school. Yet, none of them truly know what the future holds for them.
In the past, many families in the camp dreamed of resettling in a third country to rebuild their lives. Today, that dream has faded so much that most no longer dare to hope for the impossible. The same goes for education in the camp. Every child knows that no matter how hard they study or how dedicated they are, their dreams cannot materialize because diplomas issued within the refugee camp are not legally recognized outside of it.
I am one of the children who left the camp to pursue an education outside, knowing that our dreams stood a much better chance of coming true out here. I have a friend in the camp whose family fled mortal danger from Myanmar to Ban Mai Nai Soi over 23 years ago. She grew up in the camp’s education system, eventually earning an associate degree. Despite spending over 15 years studying, she returned to work as a teacher inside the camp after graduation. Even though she fulfilled her wish to teach, her meager income could not support her family.
She eventually quit her job to apply for university. Time and again, she faced disappointment because admissions requirements always cycled back to needing an official Thai national ID card. Yet, she never gave up. She kept looking for opportunities until she got accepted into an American university that offered distance learning—even without an ID card. She often tells me she still doesn’t know if all her hard work will ever yield a real-world future. All she knows is that she has a dream, and she wants to reach it.
Many other children in the camp face the exact same future as my friend. They are starting to realize that camp education cannot turn their dreams into reality. Their dreams are far more limited than those of children growing up in the city. Inside the camp, they only see a few possibilities: becoming a teacher, a doctor, or a soldier. Those are the only three paths visible to them.
Because of this, more and more refugee families choose to send their children to study outside the camp. My parents did the same for me when I was young, hoping to give me opportunities in life that they never had.
Having spent nearly 17 years in the education system outside the camp, I can see the stark contrast between life inside and outside its borders. Whenever I return to the camp, I show the children and elders videos of the outside world. They are always fascinated because they have never seen these things or known what happens outside. They constantly ask what this or that is, as their entire world has been confined strictly to the camp.
Many children tell me I am lucky to study outside, pursue my dreams, and see the world. But in reality, reaching university was an obstacle course of trials. As I advanced further through the educational system, my friends gradually dropped out. Not everyone could make it to higher levels—economic stress, family status, social pressures, and varying views on the value of education all pull strongly against a person’s dreams.
When people ask how I feel about the Thai Ministry of Education preparing to step in and manage education inside refugee camps, I tell them it is the ultimate dream of my friends and every child there. The chance to earn an official diploma that they can actually use for their future turns an uncertain fantasy into a real, tangible hope. What these kind adults in Thailand are doing can transform a fragile, uncertain life into a dream grounded in reality.
I want to represent these children in thanking those who finally see them—for giving them the chance to learn and the courage to dream.
Ultimately, I believe all children deserve the chance to dream, to act on those dreams, and to see the world. I want them to be children to the fullest—brave enough to think, brave enough to dream, and confident that the future they are building is not just a daydream, but a real world waiting for them.
